List of highest-grossing films in India

The following is a list of highest-grossing films in India, with gross revenue in Indian rupees. This is not an official tracking of figures, as reliable sources that publish data are frequently pressured to increase their estimates.[1] Box office collections have been steadily increasing in the 21st century, the main reasons attributed to the rise in ticket prices, and increase in number of theatres and prints of a film.[2] Most of the highest-grossing films at the domestic box office are Indian films, particularly from Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry, followed by the Tamil (Kollywood) and the Telugu (Tollywood). For a list of highest-grossing Indian films worldwide, see List of highest-grossing Indian films.

Overview

The highest-grossing film in India is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), with a total domestic gross of 1,429.83 crore (US$218 million).[3] The film broke a number of domestic records,[4] grossing over 415 crore in its opening weekend.[5] Dangal (2016), which is the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide,[6] was the previous highest-grossing domestic film, with a domestic gross of ₹538.03 crore.[7]

When adjusted for inflation, the highest-grossing film in India is Mughal-e-Azam (1960), with an adjusted domestic gross equivalent to an estimated 2,000 crore in 2017.[lower-alpha 1] It is followed by Mother India (1957),[lower-alpha 2] Sholay (1975),[lower-alpha 3] Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, and then Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994),[8] each with an adjusted domestic gross exceeding ₹1,000 crore. In terms of footfalls, the films estimated to have crossed 100 million (10 crore) tickets sold in India are Baahubali 2: The Conclusion,[9] Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, and Sholay.[8]

The Indian market is dominated by domestic Indian films, which represented 85% of the country's box office revenue in 2015; this is the highest for a major film market after the United States, where domestic Hollywood films represent 88.8% of its box office revenue.[10] While Indian films remain at the top of the domestic Indian box office, the market for Hollywood films has gradually been growing;[11] the market share of foreign films rose from 8% in 2014 up to 15% in 2015,[12] with Hollywood films representing 10% of the Indian market in 2016[13] and 13% in 2017.[14] Some of the earliest foreign blockbusters in India included Mackenna's Gold (1969) starring Gregory Peck and Omar Sharif,[15] and Bruce Lee's Hong Kong martial arts films Enter the Dragon (in 1975) and Way of the Dragon (in 1979).[16] In terms of nett business, Hollywood's production Avengers: Endgame (2019), is the highest grossing foreign film in India, is the 4th highest-grossing film in India with a collection of ₹373 crore[17] and the 6th highest-grossing film as per total gross with a collection of ₹446 crore.

Adjusted gross

The following table lists adjusted gross figures, largely based on the data given by Box Office India,[87] which calculates adjusted net figures by multiplying the footfalls of a film with the average ticket price (ATP) of the most recent year where ATP data is available.[88] Adjusted gross figures are obtained by extrapolating adjusted net figures. The list is limited to films released from the year 1993 onwards, due to the paucity of reliable data for films released before that year. As Box Office India tracks only Hindi-language films,[89] it is worth noting that adjusted gross figures of the films shot in other Indian languages like Telugu and Tamil may not feature in the list.
