List of The Masked Singer (American TV series) episodes

The Masked Singer is an American reality singing competition television series based on the South Korean namesake program. The show, which involves celebrities singing in elaborate full-body costumes, was developed by Craig Plestis and is hosted by Nick Cannon. During most episodes, four to six celebrities perform covers of famous songs in costumes in front of a studio audience and panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke. After the audience and panelists vote for their favorite performances, the celebrity with the fewest votes is eliminated from the competition and takes off their mask, revealing their identity.[1][2][3]

The Masked Singer has aired 42 episodes since 2019, including 2 specials and 1 Super Bowl lead-out program.

The series has been broadcast on Fox since January 2, 2019, and has aired three seasons thus far. The first was produced by Endemol Shine North America, while Fox Alternative Entertainment has done so since the second.[4] Plestis and Izzie Pick Ibarra have served as executive producers since the first season; Rosie Seitchik and Cannon have done so since the second and third, respectively.[3][5][6] As the highest-rated entertainment series among adults 18–49 both TV seasons it has aired, the program's TV ratings have remained consistently high.[7][8] One of the episodes won a Costume Designers Guild Award in the Excellence in Variety, Reality-Competition, Live Television category, and another received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Costumes for a Variety, Nonfiction, or Reality Programming nomination.[9][10] Aside from double-length episodes, most run for about 43 minutes and carry a TV-PG or TV-14 parental rating.[11]

Viewership and ratings

While airing a season, The Masked Singer is almost always Fox's most-watched prime time TV series according to Nielsen ratings.[51]. As it receives higher DVR viewership than most TV series despite being a reality show, The Hollywood Reporter deemed it a "phenomenon".[52] In June 2020, Variety named it the network's "most successful entertainment property".[53] The program's premiere was the highest-rated unscripted TV series debut since The X Factor in 2011. Following three days of DVR viewing, the 18–49 rating grew by 30 percent—the highest increase ever for a premiere in the show's genre.[54] Although initially dropping, ratings grew towards the end of the season, and the finale became the most-watched episode.[55] It concluded the 2018–19 TV season as the highest-rated new series among adults 18–49,[56] and the highest-rated entertainment program among teenagers, men 18–34, adults 18–34, and adults 18–49.[7] The Masked Singer was the first unscripted series to rank number one in the genre in its first season since Joe Millionaire in 2003,[57] and was one of the reasons why Fox was the only network to gain viewers compared to the previous TV season.[58]

With an average advertisement cost of $201,683 per 30 seconds according to Ad Age, the series was one of only two non-NFL programs to charge over $200,000 during the 2019–20 TV season.[59][60] The second season's premiere received a lower 18–49 rating than the previous but was similar to the first season's average.[61] The ratings for the finale also dropped, though viewership grew by almost 20 percent from the previous week's episode.[62] Deadline Hollywood cited the second season as a major reason why Fox—for the first time in the network's history—ranked number one in fall entertainment programming,[63] and Adweek named the show the "Hottest Reality/Competition Series" of 2019.[7] The premiere of the third season following Super Bowl LIV became the series's most-watched episode.[51][64] During the latter half of the season which aired during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the series—like others—experienced double-digit viewership and 18–49 rating gains compared to the episodes broadcast before the outbreak.[65][66] With 25 percent average increases in both total viewers and those in the 18–49 demographic, the third season achieved the largest season-over-season growth of all series aired during the TV season.[67] While the 18–49 rating was lower than the first, The Masked Singer remained the top entertainment show in the demographic and helped Fox become the only network to gain both overall and 18–49 viewers compared to the previous TV season.[68][8]
