Light Railway Research Society of Australia

The Light Railway Research Society of Australia is an amateur research society which focusses on narrow gauge railways, tramways, and industrial railways in Australia and places where Australian economic interests were strong such as Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and the phosphate islands of the Pacific.[1][2]

The society was founded in 1961 to foster interest in specialty railways such as for industry and tourism. While the society originated in Victoria, and much of its early focus was on the timber tramways and industrial railways of that state, it has branches which meet in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.[3] It has been credited with some of the most thorough research and publication on Light Railways, not just in Australia, but worldwide.[4]

The society publishes the Light Railways magazine and from 1977-1977 a bi-monthly news publication, Light Railway News, after which the two were combined.[5] It has published over 60 books on various themes.
