History

The Charlotte Observer headquarters (former)

The site of the development is located on the former site of the Charlotte Observer, where it operated since 1927. Lincoln Harris and Goldman Sachs purchased the 10-acre property in 2016 for a price of $37.5 million.

Buildings

Bank of America Tower

Bank of America occupies 550,000 square feet (51,000 m2) of the 841,000 square foot building. This is the fourth tower in Uptown Charlotte to carry the Bank of America name, after Bank of America Corporate Center, One Bank of America Center, and Bank of America Plaza. The building features an expansive promenade leading to its entrance and an exterior lighting package extending from the tower's pyramid to its base. Employees began moving into the building on August 12, 2019.

650 South Tryon

The second phase of the Legacy Union development includes the 18-story, 290-ft-tall 650 South Tryon building, which includes 362,000 square feet (33,600 m2) of office space. Deloitte will be the anchor tenant, leasing 90,000 square feet (8,400 m2). Construction of the building began in December 2018.

Honeywell Tower

In late 2018, Honeywell announced it would relocate its corporate headquarters from New Jersey to Charlotte, beginning in 2019. The company looked at the neighborhoods of South End and Ballantyne in Charlotte before deciding on Uptown. In June 2019, Lincoln Harris announced Honeywell will occupy 280,000 square feet (26,000 m2) in the 23-story building in the Legacy Union development, housing 750 employees. Construction began in August 2019 with completion in 2021.[2]

Phase Four

The fourth phase of the project is expected to include a luxury hotel and additional retail.
