Kumamoto Station

Kumamoto Station (熊本駅, Kumamoto-eki) is the main railway terminal of the city of Kumamoto, Japan. It is located in Nishi-ku, Kumamoto, and is operated by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu).

History

The station, one of the key stations of the railway network in the island of Kyushu, opened on July 1, 1891 when the Kyushu Railway extended the railway (later named Kagoshima Main Line) from Tamana Station (then called Takase Station) to this station.

In 2018, a multi-year rehab of the station resulted in all the platforms being relocated from ground level to elevated, allowing for the complete redevelopment of the lower level with new retail space.

The Hōhi Main Line opened on June 21, 1914, and the Kyushu Shinkansen opened on March 12, 2011.

Passenger statistics

In fiscal 2016, the station was used by 14,576 passengers daily, and it ranked 7th among the busiest stations of JR Kyushu.[1]
