Krasiao Dam

Krasiao Dam was built in B.E.2523 (1980 CE). It is the earth dam built to restore water from Kra Siao Stream. Its length is 4,250 meters and its height is 32.5 meters. The area to restore water is 28,750 rai (46.00 km2; 17.76 sq mi). The capacity of the dam is 240 million cubic meters. It is the longest earth dam in Thailand and a large breeding ground. It is also a tourist attraction.

It is located in Dan Chang sub-district in the area of Royal Irrigation Department's Krasiao Organization of Operation and Maintenance Project. In the past, there is always a flood in Song Phi Nong District every year until B.E.2523 when Banharn Silpa-archa was the minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. He thought Krasiao Dam cannot store much water. Therefore, he ordered Royal Irrigation Department to build a reservoir at Krasiao Dam to prevent the flood.

Background

The Krasiao stream is a large part from the Tha Chin River (แม่น้ำท่าจีน).[1] The width is around 140 km. The watershed starts between Khao Lae and Khao Yhai, Ban Rai District, Uthai Thani Province. The water passes through Darn Chang District, Suphan Buri Province, that is where the project started.

Krasiao creek is one of the Tha Chin River (แม่น้ำท่าจีน) which is approximately 140 kilometres in width. Water starts between Khao Lae and Khao Yai, just above Baan rai district, Uthai Thani province. The water flows through Daan Chang district in Suphanburi province where the project headquarters is located at. Klong Ma Kham Tao – Uthong both inside and outside the Tha bode project and Sam-Chuke Kra Yai in Suphanburi are usually affected by flood disaster which came from Krasiao creek, especially when there is heavy rain. The Royal Irrigation Department has to build the dam to prevent such natural disaster which is how the Krasiao Dam was created (Project Kraseaw, 2018).

Construction

Main building

Consists of dam for collecting water. The dam irrigates water delivery system and drainage system.

Categorized into:

1.1 Dam

Water delivery system and drainage system

1.5 door for drainage water

1.6 water transfer canal which consists of 7 rivers

- main Klong from right, width 20.880 km.(คลองส่งน้ำสายใหญ่ฝั่งขวา)

- main klong from left, width 7.00 km.(คลองส่งน้ำสายใหญ่ฝั่งซาย)

- Sub klong and divided klong 5 lines.

- Water- distribution canal 8 lines

From left 4 lines, width 44.304 km.

From right 4 lines, width 54.956 km.

Maintenance and water transmission

The Krasiao dam project divides water transmission work into three parts:

2.1 First is maintenance and water transmission responding to the reservoir. The main building and Krasiao River consist of 1 line of river, area in respond around 34,852 rai.

2.2 Second is maintenance and water transmission responding to the area on the left hand side of Krasiao River, which is around 38,446 rai.

2.3 Third is maintenance and water transmission responding to the area on the right hand side of Krasiao River, which is around 91,554 rai (Kra Siao Operation and Maintenance Project, 2018).

16 years of construction

  • 1966-1971  : explore and observe the area
  • 1972  : construction started
  • 1973-1974  : had problem with geology, explore more and stopped working for a while
  • 1975  : Finished with geology and solved the problems, continued the construction
  • 1976 : built the road to the main building, around 35 km.
  • 1977-1980 : Started digging the Klong around the area, built the control building and emergency way to drain water
  • 1981  : Constructed water transmission and transfer water system

Advantages of the project

- Solved the problem of flooding in the area around 350,000 Rai

-Transfer water to agricultural areas in Krasiao project around 110,844 Rai

-The reservoir is home to fish farming and other species

-Area around the dam became a tourist attraction and relaxing space

-For local people to use and consume water from the dam
