Kotwal (surname)
Kotwal (Marathi: कोतवाल) Cotwal, is a Title, Sub-caste and a surname in India. The Kotwal are Title in the Khangars, Surname in Kolis of the Gujarat, Gurjaras and Brahmins and the Sub-caste of Halbas.[1][2] This title was given to the leaders of fort, head of town police, from Mughal time Kotwal title was given to the rulers of large town.[3]
