Kodam XIII/Merdeka

Until 1957, the 7th Territorial Army Command Eastern Indonesia was responsible for the defense and security needs of the peoples of the northern Celebes. This formation was raised in September of that year by order of the then Chief of Staff of the Army, General Abdul Haris Nasution, to counteract the Permesta rebellion by Minahasa leaders in this part of the island, and was dissolved first in 1985 when it formed parts of Kodam VII/Wirabuana together with Kodam XIV/Hasanuddin.

Based on Decree of the Chief of Staff of the Army Number 33 of 2016, General TNI Mulyono presided over the reformation of Kodam XIII / Merdeka, located in Manado City, North Sulawesi. The reinauguration ceremony of Kodam XIII / Merdeka was also followed by the inauguration ceremony of Major General Ganip Warsito, SE., MM as the first Regional Commander of the resstablished command.[3][4][5]

June 16, its Command Day, was chosen to commemorate the landing of Army personnel in the "Merdeka" Military Operation against rebel forces of the Permesta rebellion on the Kema Coast of North Sulawesi on June 16, 1958 at 06:00 Central Indonesian Time. This joint operation with the Mobile Brigade Corps of the National Police and the Indonesian Marine Corps precipated the fall of the future provincial capital of North Sulawesi to government forces and the surrender of all combatants, which concluded in 1961.[6]
