‘Khaama’ is an ancient ‘Persian’ word which means ‘ The Pen’. [3]

Khaama Press operates in 3 languages: English; Pashto; and Persian.[4][5] The Khaama Press News Agency is a private firm that works in the area of reporting news from Afghanistan.[6]

Khaama Press is one of the most popular websites in Afghanistan based on Alexa ranking,[7] and Google News.[8] According to a recent demographic reports by Google Analytics, it 50% of its audience comes from Afghanistan and the other 50% comes from other parts of the world including United States of America, Canada, European Countries, Asia, Middle East, South Asia and Australia.[7]

History

In 2009, the Khaama Press news portal was designed by founder Khushnood Nabizada to publish stories about successful Afghan personalities and biographies of well-known figures including poets and politicians. After initially receiving positive feedback the site expanded, and in 2010, Khaama Press obtained an operating license from the Ministry of Information and Culture of Afghanistan as an official News Agency in the country.[1]

Why did [Khushnood Nabizada] decided to invest and establish [Khaama Press], he answers: Afghanistan country entered in to a new era with the assistance of international community in 2001 after the fall of ‘Taliban’, an extremist religious group that led the country for 5 years. Since then, ‘Afghanistan’ received a large amount of development funds from the International society, but most of these grants were not spent ‘transparent’ as a result of poor monitoring and control. Media and press agencies are always a great help and a powerful tool to keep eyes on the executive and implementing agencies, promoting ‘transparency’.I loved to be the ‘throat’ of my people and ‘share’ their pains, failures, success and developments by writing. Therefore, I established Khaama Press back in October 2010 to help the journalism sector of Afghanistan. Afghanistan, a country that has been in the midst of civil war and violence for more than 40 years, in the absence of media and ‘freedom of speech’, has much to say and independent news agencies such as ‘Khaama Press’ can assist to report on security, society, business and political issues to provide awareness and assist the partner global organizations in decision making, providing them with the accurate and on-time information.[3]

Audience

The Khaama Press News agency draws busy traffic with readers from Afghanistan, India, United States, Iran and Germany according to Alexa Web and Information Company.[9] Its website receives over 50,000 visits daily.[10]

Khaama Press posts get substantial traffic on social media sites, with around 1.47m likes on Facebook and over 250K followers on Twitter as of Aug 22, 2019.[11][12]
