Kamen Tchanev

Kamen Tchanev / Kamen Chanev (Bulgarian: Камен Чанев) (27 August 1964 Sliven, Bulgaria) is a Bulgarian tenor.

Early years and Education

Kamen Tchanev was born in Sliven. He graduated the French language school in his home town.
In 1991 he graduated the Bulgarian State Music Academy "Pancho Vladigerov" and in 1992 he specialized in the Boris Hristov Music Academy in Rome.
He has worked together with Alexandrina Milcheva, Ghena Dimitrova, Leone Magiera (Luciano Pavarotti's pianist).

In 1994 he was laureate in the International Competition Jussi Bjorling.

Career

His debut was at the Sofia National Opera, as Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto . At the beginning of his career, he had roles like Faust, Werther, Alfredo, Lensky, Edgardo, Tonio, "Barbiere di Sevilla" Almaviva, and Don Ottavio. Later he added more dramatic roles, like Cavaradossi and Calaf, to his repertoire.

In 1993 Kamen Tchanev started working at the Sofia National Opera. Five years later he moved to Prague, where he sang two years long before becoming a free lancer.

His prospering career lead him to performing in various places around the world, including playing Rodolfo in Atlanta, Don José in Philadelphia, Manrico in Seoul, Pinkerton in Amsterdam, Cavaradossi in Terracina, Des Grieux in Auckland. Kamen Tchanev performed in many opera houses in Bulgaria, Czech Republic (since 1997 he is frequent guest in the Prague State Opera), France, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, Romania, South Korea and many others.

He has made contracts with the Vienna State Opera, in which he performed as Pinkerton, as well as in Tokyo, where he transformed into Riccardo and Calaf, Deutsche Oper Berlin as Riccardo again, Hamburg State Opera as Cavaradossi, Dortmund, Beijing, etc.

In the past few years, he is known for performing as Ismaele in Vienna, Manrico at Gran Teatre del Liceu, Macduff in Dublin, Don Carlos in Frankfurt, Pinkerton in Valencia, etc. His contracts until 2015/16 include "Tosca", "Attila", and "Aida" in Rome, "Don Carlo" in Seville, "Cavalleria Rusticana", "Pagliacci" and "Tosca" in Tel Aviv and Munich,"Pique Dame", "Nabucco", and "Turandot" in Warsaw, "Carmen" in Basel, "Manon Lescaut (Puccini)" in the State Opera in Hamburg and Auckland, etc.

He has collaborated with conductors such as Ricardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Nicola Luisotti, Michail Jurowski, Paolo Carignani, Donato Renzetti, Philippe Auguin and Asher Fisch and many others.

Recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio, RAI-2, Italy and in 1999 he recorded with Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra, Nayden Todorov conducting a CD production for the American label MMO.[1]

Recent contracts for 2018/2019 include roles in Berlin, Budapest, Savonlinna, Beijing, Kassel, Montreal, Zagreb, Sigulda, Tokyo, Toronto, Vilnius, Nur-Sultan, St. Gallen, Brussels, etc.
