Born in 1726 in "Heuberg am Wald" (Heuberg on the forest). Unfortunately "Heuberg" is a relatively common place name in Germany, so the exact birthplace of Rabbi Kalonymos is unknown. However, by knowing that Rabbi Kalonymos lived in Dresden at the end of his life, it can be assumed that he was born in that general geographic region. The most likely candidate for "Heuberg am Wald" is the forested city of Gotha, Germany which had a neighbourhood called "Heuberg".[1] His father, Rav Yoel ben Isaac was a minor rabbi and a paternal descendant of Aaron ben Samuel as well as the brother of Aaron ben Isaac. In his early years, Rabbi Kalonymos studied Torah in Hamburg under Jacob Emden. He later moved to Dresden, Germany, where he served as Chief Rabbi. In Dresden, he married Golda, the daughter of Aaron ben Mordecai of Rödelheim. Rabbi Kalonymos wrote an extensive work on the economics of the Talmud, but it contents have been lost. In his later life, he amassed notable wealth by partially owning a Jewish printing press. Rabbi Kalonymos died in 1763 in Dresden. His son David Shalom, was also a Rabbi and married the great-granddaughter of Rabbi Simcha Hagadol HaKohen Rappaport.[2]
