Kalanak, Tajikistan

Kalanak (Persian: قلعه‌نَک‎) is a town and jamoat in Tajikistan. It is located in Rasht District in Districts of Republican Subordination province. The jamoat has a total population of 6420.[1]

Kalanak, Tajikistan is a town in the Districts of Republican Subordination in central Tadjikistan.

The town is on the Surkhob River.

History

During the 1920s the area was a hotbed for the Basmachi, the anti-Soviet resistance in Central Asia.[2][3] The Petra Pervogo Range with a height of 4,745 is nearby.

During the Civil War in Tajikistan from 1992–1997, the area was a hotbed for Islamist forces, and October 2010, the Tajik Interior Ministry asserted it had killed three militants nearby at Gharm amid an alleged rise in Islamic militancy in the region.[4][5]
