Sudhakaran is the face of Congress Party in the district and he also known as the king of Kannur and has been the voice of party workers whenever they are attacked by the CPM[2]. His leadership and strong political opinions have won him the support of lakhs of followers[3][4][5][6][7]

Kannur constitutency has been a slippery ground for all parties.[8] Though viewed as a formidable fortress of the CPM, Kannur has fallen to the Congress-led United Democratic Front on equal measures. Even in 2014, when P K Sreemathy wrested the seat from Sudhakaran by a margin of 6,566 votes, more people had voted NOTA (none of the above). As many votes were cast against two other 'Sudhakarans'.
