Biography

Juan Gutiérrez Moreno was born in Ronda (Spain) son of Juan Gutiérrez and Juana Moreno, belonging to a family of Andalusian farmers. He studied philosophy and theology in the city of Málaga,[2] and was graduated with a Master's degree from the Royal College of Surgery of Cádiz. He arrived at the port of Montevideo on June 29, 1809,[3] as a personal physician of Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros.[4]

Juan Gutiérrez Moreno was a pioneer of the medicine of the Río de la Plata. Towards the 1830s he performs several written works about rabies,[5] and smallpox, two epidemics that had a catastrophic effect in Buenos Aires and Montevideo.[6] In addition to having served in the Hospital Maciel,[7] Gutiérrez had served as a doctor of the Police Department Montevideo.[8] In 1843, he participated in the defense of the city during the Great Siege of Montevideo.[9]

Juan Gutiérrez Moreno was married to Lorenza Moxica López de Castilla, daughter of José Joaquín Moxica, born in Gipuzkoa, and María Joaquina López de Castilla, born in Montevideo. He and his wife were the parents of numerous children, including Carmen Gutiérrez Moxica, married with Juan Manuel Canaveris y Denis, belonging to a traditional family of Buenos Aires.[10]

His son, Guillermo Gutiérrez Moxica, was married to Carmen Fynn, daughter of Juan León Fynn, born in London, and María Bardler, born in Montevideo.[11]
