Josh Beames

Joshuah Thomas Beames (born 19 March 1988) is an Australian photographer from Warrnambool, Victoria. His works using long exposures have received media coverage for capturing natural phenomena as well as unique moments in astronomy and meteorology,[1][2] both in Australia and internationally.

Early life

Josh Beames was born in the coastal city of Warrnambool, Victoria, on Australia's Great Ocean Road. As a teenager, he was a keen surfer and began exploring photography to capture images out on the ocean.[3]

Career

Beames became more interested in photography as a young adult and quickly progressed from experimenting with smartphone and GoPro cameras to professional equipment, after his work received local news coverage and caught the attention of Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.[3][4][5] Several of Beames' works have received media coverage for capturing natural phenomena,[1][2][4][6] including aurora australis, lightning storms, and bioluminescent sea life, which has won recognition from the Bureau of Meteorology several times.[7][8]

Beames is self-taught and has said his camera techniques are the result of "trial and error", while he is creatively motivated by capturing the experience of exploration and a sense of adventure:

I love being able to capture and share what I see when I’m out there exploring. A lot of people get lost in their day-to-day routine and forget about life itself, and I hope that what I capture can take them away [from the mundane], if only for a few seconds.[9]

Beames also works as a freelancer on events, real estate, and commercial tourism projects, amassing a client list that includes Qantas, Jetstar, Tourism Australia, and Tourism Tasmania.[3] He lists American photographer Chris Burkard amongst his creative influences.[10]

Partnership with Nikon Australia

In 2018, Beames began working full-time as a photographer and soon later secured an official partnership with Nikon Australia, supporting his efforts to travel and photograph Australian and international landscapes, including The Twelve Apostles, Uluru, The Grampians, and Milford Sound.[3]

In 2019, Beames joined the Nikon School as a photography lecturer and conducts workshops in Melbourne and regional Victoria.[11][12][13][14]
