José María Martín Carpena

José María Martín Carpena (Málaga, 1950 - Málaga, 2000) was Partido Popular’s politician[1] who was killed by ETA on July 15, 2000.[2]

Biography

He graduated in business administration, specialization in taxation and tax consultancy and he also worked at the National Institute of Social Security in the spanish Ministry of Social Affairs.[3]

His political career began when he was appointed Councillor by the Partido Popular on April 21, 1997, in replacement of Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla who went as Deputy to the Junta de Andalucía. In the municipal elections of 1999, Jose Maria ranked number 15 in the list led by Celia Villalobos. He revalidated his position as Councilman for Partido Popular since they obtained an absolute majority with 19 councillors.

Murder

He was killed at 21:40 p.m. on Saturday of July 15, 2000 while he took the official car outside his home to go to a local speech called the Proclamation of the Biznaga. Carpena was accompanied by his wife and his daughter, who was 17 years old. His family was present during the murder. When the family was getting into the official car the terrorist Igor Solana Matarran, who had been waiting for more than one hour for their departure, shot six times at him.  Four bullets reached the politician and one in the neck causing his death. Once the murder was committed, the killer escaped in another vehicle where the member, Harriet Iragi Gurrutxaga, was waiting for him. Martín Carpena never received threats, so he did not have bodyguards.[4]

The next day a burning chapel was installed in the city of Malaga, and the citizens carried out a protest against the violence and terrorism. After the burning chapel, a funeral was held in the Cathedral of Malaga, which was attended by numerous politicians among them were José María Aznar, Manuel Chaves, Ana Botella, Jaime Mayor Oreja, Jesús Posada, Javier Arenas and Mayor Francisco de la Torre.[5]

Arrest of murderers

Igor Solana and Harriet Iragi were arrested in Seville three months later after murdering the military Antonio Muñoz Cariñanos. In 2001, Igor and Harriet were sentenced to 30 years in prison.[6]

Recognition

The day after his murder was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal of the city. In September of the same year, it was decided to change the name of the Palace of Sports City of Malaga to Palace of Sports Martin Carpena, named until today. His hometown held a tribute in his honour 10 years after his death in 2010. There is a bust in his memory in the Park of Huelin.[7]
