Murdoch is the son of former Norwood Football Club player Roger Murdoch.[3] His younger brother Brodie Murdoch was recruited by St Kilda in the 2012 AFL Draft.[4]

He won the grand final sprint in 2014. In 2018, on the back of a poor performance in the elimination final against Melbourne, he was delisted by Geelong in October. Shortly after, he signed a three year contract at the Gold Coast Suns. [5]
