Smith made a single first-class appearance for a Yorkshire XI against Manchester Cricket Club in 1845 at Moss Lane, Manchester. In some accounts, Sheffield are called Yorkshire in this match although Manchester did not call themselves Lancashire.[1] In a match which Yorkshire won by an innings and 67 runs, Smith was dismissed by John Sherman for a duck.[2] His brother Paul Smith also played first-class cricket.
