Informer (newspaper)

Informer is a pro-government daily tabloid newspaper published in Belgrade, Serbia. As of 2016, it is allegedly highest-circulation daily in Serbia, with over 100,000 copies sold every day.

The newspaper deals with various topics including politics, regional and world news, popular culture, health, and sports. It is known for political bias in favor of the currently ruling Serbian Progressive Party[6]

It is also notorious[7][8] for publishing false information,[9][10][11] insulting and discrediting Aleksandar Vučić's political opponents.[12] The texts published by the tabloid sometimes include chauvinist discourse.[13][14][15][16]

In 2015, Informer was responsible for a scandal after publishing screenshots of a porn clip starring American adult actress Diamond Foxxx, for which the newspapers claimed to be a secret sex tape of Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarović.[17] This action was "sharply condemned" by Serbian Ministry of Culture and Information which called for sanctioning of individuals responsible for this,[18] as well as MP Azra Jasavić in neighbouring Monteregro, where these newspapers are also being published. Jasavić called for changes in law that would prevent Informer's "brutaisation over women" which are according to her being especially targeted by this tabloid.[19]

In January 2019, EU vs Disinformation published that in 2018, Informer was one of the leading Serbian tabloids in publishing false narratives and spreading of war rhetoric.[20] According to Serbian investigative journalism portal Crime and Corruption Reporting Network, more than 700 fake news were published on the front pages of pro-government tabloids during 2018, including Informer as the best-selling newspaper.[21][22] Many of them were about alleged attacks on Aleksandar Vučić and attempts of coups, as well as messages of support to him by Vladimir Putin.[22] In 2020, Twitter announced that they shut down the network of 8,500 spam accounts that wrote 43 million tweets – acted in concert to cheerlead for president Vučić and his party, boost Vučić-aligned content and attack his opponents.[23] Links from the Informer official site were among the most frequently shared content.[23]
