Premise

"Lights up on Washington Heights... The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life."

Cast

Production

On November 7, 2008, Universal Pictures announced that they planned to adapt the original musical as a feature film for release in 2011.[1][2] Kenny Ortega was set to direct the film, which was slated to begin filming in summer 2011.[3][4] However, the project was canceled in March 2011.[5] In January 2012, Lin-Manuel Miranda stated that the film adaptation was back under discussion.[6] In May 2016, it was announced that Miranda would co-produce the film with Harvey Weinstein and backing from The Weinstein Company.[7]

On June 10, 2016, Jon M. Chu came on board to direct the film adaptation of the musical.[8]

In the aftermath of numerous sexual misconduct allegations made against Weinstein, his producer credit on the film was removed, with the rights to the film eventually auctioned off to Warner Bros. for $50 million.[9]

In October 2018, Anthony Ramos was cast in the film for an unspecified role, later revealed to be the lead of Usnavi.[10] On November 5, 2018, it was reported that Rita Moreno had begun talks with the studio to star in the film, however shortly afterward this was revealed to be incorrect.[11]

In January 2019, Corey Hawkins was cast in the role of Benny.[12] In April 2019, Jimmy Smits, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Olga Merediz, Gregory Diaz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephanie Beatriz and Dascha Polanco were cast.[13][14][15][16] In June 2019, Marc Anthony and Lin-Manuel Miranda joined the cast.[17][18]

Filming began on June 3, 2019 in New York.[19][20]

Release

In the Heights is scheduled to be released on June 18, 2021.[21] It was previously scheduled to be released on June 26, 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[22][23]

Marketing

A teaser trailer was released on December 11, 2019, followed by a full trailer the next day.[24][25]
