Operating since 1989, it is co-sponsored by IEEE and ACM SIGARCH.[1] The general emphasis of the conference are microprocessors and integrated circuits.[1] Processor makers often announce details about future processor designs at the symposium.[2][3][4]

At Hot Chips 2016, Samsung announced GDDR6 as the successor of GDDR5X.
