When the new Seanad Éireann was established in 1937, he was elected by the National University of Ireland constituency. He was re-elected at each subsequent election and served until his death in office in 1960.[1]

He holds the record as the longest serving member of the Seanad, as he was a member for a total of 35 years, 11 months.

He died in Dublin in 23 September 1960.
