Mixed martial arts career

Early career

Born and raised in the Philippines, Sarmiento began competing regionally in Hawaii, making his professional debut in 2002. Sarmiento lost his first two professional fights via decision before facing Nick Diaz at a Warriors Quest event later that year. Sarmiento lost in the second round after his corner threw in the towel. After compiling a record of 6-6, Sarmiento was set to face Rob McCullough at WEC 9 on January 16, 2004. Sarmiento won via split decision, then won his next four fights as well (and the SuperBrawl 33 lightweight tournament) before falling to Roger Huerta in a third-round TKO loss.

After defeating Shane Nelson at Rumble on the Rock in July of 2005 via unanimous decision, Sarmiento faced KJ Noons in October of 2005, losing via third-round TKO.

Strikeforce

On March 10, 2006 Sarmiento made his promotional debut at Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Gracie against Gilbert Melendez. Sarmiento was defeated via second-round TKO.

On June 9, 2006 Sarmiento next faced Josh Thomson at Strikeforce: Revenge. Sarmiento lost via third-round submission.

Independent promotions

After dropping a decision in a rematch with McCullough at WFA 4: King of the Streets to bring his losing streak to five, Sarmiento bounced back, winning his next five.

On August 2, 2007, Sarmiento faced Bart Palaszewski at the IFL Lightweight Semifinals in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Sarmiento lost via third-round submission.

With a record of 34-23, Sarmiento faced Sung Hwa Han for the Pacific Xtreme Combat lightweight title in September of 2012, winning via split decision. He later defended his title once in February of 2013.

Sarmiento last competed for ONE FC in 2014 against Herbert Burns. He lost via unanimous decision.
