Shō Kyō was the seventh son of Shō Kyū (Prince Kin Chōkō) and Shuriōkimi Aji-ganashi. He was also a half-brother of King Shō Hō. After Shō Shitsu succeeded the throne, Shō Kyō led a mission Edo in 1649.
Prince Gushikawa was also the author of Ishinagu nu uta (石投子之歌), a Ryūka which was the de facto national anthem of the Ryukyu Kingdom.[1] Some scholars have thought it was very similar to Kimigayo, the national anthem of Japan.[2]
