Fiji at the 1976 Summer Olympics

Fiji send a delegation to compete at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 17 July to 1 August 1976. This was the nation's fifth apperance at an Summer Olympic Games with their first appearance occuring at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Fiji's delegation consisted of two people competing in the Athletics with Tony Moore competing in the 100m, 200m and the long jump while Miriama Tuisorisori-Chambault competed in the women's pentahlon and long jump.

Background

The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASNOC) was recognized by the International Olympic Committe on 1 January 1955.[1] The following year they would debut at the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne with 5 athletes competing from three different sports.[2] After competing in the following games in 1960,[3] they missed the following edition before returning for the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City and have taken part in every Summer Olympics (bar 1980) since.[4] The 1976 Summer Olympics were held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 17 July to 1 August 1976; a total of 6,084 athletes representing 92 National Olympic Committees took part.[5] Fiji sent two athletes to Montreal, Tony Moore and Miriama Tuisorisori-Chambault.[6]

Athletics

Fiji sent a two-person team to the Athletics to compete in four different events. The first was Tony Moore who was 25 years old at the time of the 1976 Summer Olympics as he competed in his only Olympics.[7] He first competed in the men's 100 metres on 23 July where in heat 9 he would finsh last in his heat with a time of 11.16 seconds.[8] Two days later on the 25 July, he would compete in the men's 200 metres heats where he finished in fourth place ahead of Haitian runner Philippe Étienne. In the quarter-finals, he finished in 7th place in his heat, six tenths ahead of last place runner, Abdul Aziz Abdul Kareem from Kuwait.[9] Moore's final event was the long jump where in qualifying he would finish in 15th place in Group B of qualification and 31st overall with a measurment of 6.81 metres.[10]

The other athlete that competed for Fiji was Miriama Tuisorisori-Chambault who competed in her first of two Olympic Games that she competed in.[11] Her first event was on the 23 July with the premlinaries of the women's long jump. She would end up in 27th place with a measurment of 5.79 metres.[12]. Two days later, she competed in the women's pentathlon which was five athletics displinces held over in two days. Her best result over the two days was in the 200 metres where she finished 13th with a time of 24.89 as she finished 18th overall with 3827 points in the competition which saw a tiebreaker between the two East Germans for the gold medal (Siegrun Siegl and Christine Laser).[13]
