The Cook Islands elects a legislature on a national level. The Parliament of the Cook Islands has 24 members, elected for a four-year term in single-seat constituencies. The Cook Islands has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties and it is extremely difficult for any other party achieve electoral success.
An election was held on 26 September 2006, after the opposition Cook Islands Party won a by-election in Matevera, leaving the government without a majority. The result was a close victory for the Democratic Party. An election was held on 9 July 2014, which resulted in a 5-seat majority for the Cook Islands Party.[1] The next election was held in 2018.
