History

Edgewood Mall, the first enclosed shopping center in McComb, was built in 1987 by Prescott Sherman.[4][5] Anchored by JCPenney, Beall-Ladymon, and Walmart, the mall opened its doors in July 1987 with a total 236,324 square feet (21,955 m2) of retail space.[6] The mall was built on land owned by the Sherman family.[7][8]

In 1994, the Beall-Ladymon chain was bought out and converted to a Stage department store in early 1995.[9] Sears replaced the former Walmart anchor space, vacated in 1998 when Walmart built a Supercenter next door, in March 1999. A major overhaul of the mall in 1999 included a 15,466 square feet (1,437 m2) expansion of the JCPenney anchor, construction of an additional 25,000 square feet (2,323 m2) of space for specialty shops, and addition of fourth large (71,798 square feet (6,670 m2)) anchor, Mississippi-based McRae's.[2] This expansion, capped by a grand re-opening in September 1999, left the mall with over 400,000 square feet (37,161 m2) of retail space.[2][6]

In 2002, Mississippi Business Journal reported that Prescott Sherman had given $2 million to the School of Engineering at the University of Mississippi from the Edgewood Mall.[5][10] Sears closed in 2012.[11] A Hobby Lobby replaced half of the Sears anchor space in 2015, making the store the only non-enclosed store of Edgewood Mall to date. In 2016, Marshall's took the other half of the former Sears anchor space. In 2019, Stage Stores announced that it would converted all of its stores to Gordmans, including the Goody's at Edgewood Mall. This conversion will take place in 2020.
