The town's name probably came from the ancient Roman city Hadrianopolis (Ancient Greek: Ἁδριανούπολις), also known as Hadriane (Ancient Greek: Ἀδριανή), which was located near present-day Deriana.[2]

Hadrianopolis' ruins and archaeological site are near the town.
