Department of Primary Industries (New South Wales)
The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, a division of the New South Wales Government, is responsible for the administration and development for agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, forestry, and biosecurity in New South Wales. The Department works to drive innovation in primary industries to improve resilience, productivity and sustainability, and to ensure risks are managed for natural resources, farming and food.

Leadership
The department is led by its Director-General, currently Scott Hansen, who reports to the Minister for Primary Industries, presently the Honourable Niall Blair MP.
The department sits within the wider portfolio of the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, led by its Secretary, currently Simon Smith AO, who reports to the Deputy Premier, Minister for Primary Industries, Minister for Regional Water, Minister for Trade and Industry (New South Wales) presently the Honourable Niall Blair, and Minister for Lands and Forestry, and Minister for Racing presently the Honourable Paul Toole (New South Wales), Minister for Western Sydney, Minister for WestConnex, and Minister for Sport, Minister for Tourism and Major Events, and assistant Minister for Skills MP.
Legislation
The department's powers are principally drawn from a range of legislation including the Biosecurity Act (2015) (NSW),[1] Agricultural Industry Services Act (1998), Biological Control Act (1985), Forestry Act (1916), and Fisheries Management Act (1994), Fisheries Act (1935) plus over sixty other acts.
History
The department was formed in July 2004, with the amalgamation of NSW Department of Mineral Resources, NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries, State Forests NSW.
In 2009, it was amalgamated into the New South Wales Department of Industry and Investment and then in August 2011 formed part of the New South Wales Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services, known as NSW Department of Industry since 2017.[2]
