Dehlan Lower, also spelled as Dahlan Lower, is the largest village of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.[1][2] Recently, Dehlan was adopted by Sh. Anurag Singh Thakur, the sitting Member of Parliament from the Hamirpur seat under Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna.

Geography

Dahlan is the largest village of Himachal Pradesh. It is 2 km from the border of the Punjab district of Ropar. The village has sub-divisions: Dahlan, Upper Dahlan, and Lower Dahlan, including बड़ैहार, Kuhi, चिलैआल, Johorowal, and Pakhubela. Bashar has its own Panchayat (village council). Upper Dahlan and Lower Dahlan have separate village councils. Johorowal and Kuhi (including Pakhubela) also have separate Panchayats. Overall these villages have five panchayats. When Una was part of the Hoshiarpur district, it was the largest village of Punjab. After separation, it became part of Himachal Pradesh. The main castes in the village are: Baheti/Choudhary, Jatt, Tarkhan, Brahmin, Lohar, Chamar, Jheer, Nai and a small Muslim community. The main occupation is agriculture. The language and culture of the village is Punjabi. Dahlan is near Una, Dharamshala, Mandi, Hamirpur and other places in Himachal Pradesh.[3] The village is divided in two Gram Panchayats, namely Lower Dahlan and Upper Dahlan. Dahlan is 2 km from the Himachal Pradesh/Punjab Mehatpur border. Dahlan is the biggest village of Himachal.

Demographics

The people are mainly of Hindu Brahmin (Lower Dahlan) and Sikh (Upper Dahlan) communities. Many international/national level kabaddi and basketball players are from this village.

More than 600 villagers serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, HP Police, CRPF, BSF and CISF, and many IPS and IAS officers are from Dahlan.

There are eight temples and six gurdwaras in Dahlan.

Transport

National Highway 503 Extension passes through this village.[4]
