Deerskin (film)

Deerskin (French: Le Daim) is a 2019 French comedy horror film. Written and directed by Quentin Dupieux, the film stars Jean Dujardin and Adèle Haenel. It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight section on 15 May 2019. It was released in France on 19 June 2019 by Diaphana Distribution.

In March 2018, it was announced Jean Dujardin had joined the cast of the film, with Quentin Dupieux directing from a screenplay he wrote.[2]

Release

It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 15 May 2019 in the Directors Fortnight section.[3][4] It was released in France on 19 June 2019 by Diaphana Distribution.[5] It went onto screen at the Toronto International Film Festival on 12 September 2019.[6][7] Prior to, Greenwich Entertainment and Picturehouse Entertainment acquired U.S. and U.K. distribution rights to the film.[8][9] It also screened at AFI Fest on 16 November 2019.[10]

It was scheduled to be released in the United States on 20 March 2020.[11] However, it was pulled from the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[12] It is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 5 June 2020.[13]

Critical reception

Deerskin received positive reviews from film critics. It holds a 86% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 44 reviews, with a weighted average of 7.21/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Led by a daring performance from Jean Dujardin, Deerskin finds writer-director Quentin Dupieux working in a more accessible -- yet still distinctive -- vein."[14] On Metacritic, the film holds a rating of 73 out of 100, based on 9 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[15]
