Polkinghorne was born at Durban in April 1966. He was educated at Kearsney College, before going up to the University of Natal.[1] After completing his bachelor degree at the University of Natal, Polkinghorne studied in England as a Rhodes Scholar at Pembroke College, Oxford.[2] While studying at Oxford, he made three appearances in first-class cricket for Oxford University in 1988, playing against Hampshire, Kent and Nottinghamshire.[3]
