David Day (Canadian writer)

David Day (born 14 October 1947 in Victoria, British Columbia) is a Canadian author and poet best known for his literary criticism on J. R. R. Tolkien and his works.[1]

Biography

After finishing high school in Victoria, British Columbia, Day worked as a logger for five years on Vancouver Island before graduating in 1976 from the University of Victoria.[2] He has published over 40 books of poetry, natural history, ecology, mythology, fantasy and children's literature. He is best known for his books on the life and works of J. R. R. Tolkien.[3]

In 2015, Day was awarded a 'Distinguished Alumni Award' by the University of Victoria.[2]

He currently lives in Toronto.[3]

Works

Day has published six books of poems for adults and ten illustrated children's books of fiction and poetry. His eight non-fiction books on natural history and environmental activism include The Doomsday Book of Animals, which became the basis for the 1990s Discovery Channel series Lost Animals of the 20th Century.

In 2019, Day published The Illustrated World of Tolkien and the leather-bound An Encyclopedia of Tolkien. In 2020, Thunder Bay Press issued a boxed-set of six of Day's Tolkien Illustrated Guides in its Word Cloud Classics series.[4]
