Background and composition

Taeyang revealed that the initial idea for the song was conceived four years earlier in 2013.[1] The single was originally intended to be included in Big Bang's album Made (2016), however Taeyang wasn't satisfied with its original production and kept the song.[2] While working on White Night, his team couldn't come up with a single he felt "would resonate with listeners" like his biggest hit "Eyes, Nose, Lips", from Rise (2014). He then started re-working in "Darling", which he felt had a "similar flow, a similar style, but that had even deeper emotional depth" than "Eyes, Nose, Lips".[2]

Musically, "Darling" is credited as a piano-based pop ballad.[3] Taeyang stated that the lyrics of "Darling" aren't about a breakup but about "passionate love".[1] In "Darling", the singer's "stripped-back vocals" take the center stage.[4]

Music video

On August 14, 2017, a teaser video was released by YG Entertainment[5] and two days later, its music video was officially released. It was shot in Los Angeles and Alaska.[6] The video features Taeyang running against the sand winds and standing alone on ice-covered mountains.[1]
