Coroner (TV series)

Coroner is a Canadian drama television series developed by Morwyn Brebner, and based on the Jenny Cooper series of novels by M. R. Hall. The series premiered on CBC in January 2019.[1] It was announced in May 2020 that a third season of the series has been ordered.[2]

Overview

The series stars Serinda Swan as Jenny Cooper, a recently-widowed coroner in Toronto who investigates suspicious deaths.[3][4]

Production and development

The series was developed from the M. R. Hall novels for television by Morwyn Brebner,[5] and was produced by Muse Entertainment, Back Alley Film Productions, and Cineflix Studios, with Adrienne Mitchell as executive producer and lead director.[3]

The first season of Coroner consists of 8 episodes.[3] Following the finale of the first season, on March 25, 2019 CBC renewed Coroner for an 8-episode second season.[6] It was announced in May 2020 that a third season is to follow.[2]

Release

The series premiered on CBC on January 7, 2019,[1] and attracted more than 1 million viewers per episode throughout the first season.[15] The series was subsequently renewed for second season.[6]

In October 2018, it was announced that NBCUniversal International Networks had acquired rights to air Coroner around the world. The series of eight one-hour episodes will premiere in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Africa, Latin America, Brazil, and Australia from late 2019.[16] Cineflix announced that the UK airing of Coroner constituted Universal TV’s strongest ever series launch.[17]

In May 2020, The CW acquired the U.S. broadcast rights for the series[18] and set to premiere on August 5, 2020.[19]

Ratings

Coroner attracted 1 million viewers per episode throughout its first season.[15]
