The underlying data is pulled from a variety of sources, including open data (usually GTFS-files provided by transport authorities) and local transit authorities.[7][8] Some data is user-generated or collected by local employed personnel.[8]

Citymapper started in 2011[9] in London, which it calls "the world’s most historic and iconic public transport city".[8] Its second city was New York.[7] As of December 2019, the company operates in 41 cities and metropolitan areas.[10] Its headquarters are in London,[9] on the South Bank, close to City Hall, where the Greater London Authority (which has responsibility for Transport for London) is based. Citymapper was founded by Azmat Yusuf, a former Google employee, who also serves as Citymapper's CEO.[6][11][12]

In December 2019 the app added a feature which allows users to choose between a "fast" route or "main roads" which avoid dimly-lit areas.[13]

Other services

In September 2017, Citymapper launched a night bus service in the East End of London.[14][15][16][17] The service in various iterations was called Smartbus, SmartRide, and Ride.[18][19] The service used eight-passenger vans, as London's transit authority, Transport for London, did not allow Citymapper to operate full-size buses.[20][21][22] Citymapper discontinued this service in July 2019.[18][19]

In February 2019, Citymapper launched Pass, a weekly subscription that gave users access to certain forms of public transit in London.[23][24][25]
