Chigateri

Chigateri is a village in the southern state of Karnataka, famous for sri Naradamuni temple which has followers mainly from Davangere, Bellary, Chitradurga districts of Karnataka State.[1][2] It was located in the Harapanahalli taluk of Bellary district (from 1997 to 2018) of Karnataka state in India. Now Harapanahalli taluk is shuffled back to Bellary district in the year 2019 on 10th January in order to give it the benefits of Hyderabad Karnataka.

As per the Population Census 2011, there are total 1,167 families residing in the village Chigateri. The total population of Chigateri is 6,054 out of which 3,158 are males and 2,896 are females thus the Average Sex Ratio of Chigateri is 917. The literacy rate of Chigateri is 74.4%.Thus Chigateri village has higher literacy rate compared to 67.3% of Davanagere district. The male literacy rate is 80.96% and the female literacy rate is 67.05% in Chigateri village.

About Chigateri

Historically Chigateri got its name referring to as ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಕೇರಿ which later translated to as ಚಿಗಟೇರಿ(Chigateri). It was ruled by local Nayak called Shivanaiah(ಶಿವನಯ್ಯ)who is said to have built Shivanaiah well(ಶಿವನಯ್ಯನ ಬಾವಿ) and Shivanaiah lake(ಶಿವನಯ್ಯನ ಕೆರೆ).

Famous poet Mudenur Sanganna (ಮುದೇನೂರು ಸಂಗಣ್ಣ) hails from this village. He was well known for his Janapada sahitya(ಜಾನಪದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ).

Famous district hospital located in Davanagere is named after chigateri as Chigateri General Hospital (CGH) (ಚಿಗಟೇರಿ ಜನರಲ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ), which is run by state government and provides tertiary health care free of cost.

It is connected by bus from Harapanahalli and Kotturu at Chigateri cross, from there you can reach the village which is 4 km away by TATA ACE, three wheeler auto service. It also connects to Harapanahalli-Hospet road at village Itagi.

The village have 3 primary schools, one high school, one primary health centre which is run by govt. of karnataka. Being a Hobali(ಹೋಬಳಿ), it has Govt offices like Post office-PIN 583127, Police station, Gram Panchayat office, Registration office.

The majority of residents are agriculturists by profession and mainly grow maize, onion, jowar, cotton, ground nuts.

There will be Naradamuni jatra(ನಾರಪ್ಪನ ಜಾತ್ರೆ) once in a year, mostly in the month of April, which attracts thousands of devotees from central portion of karnataka state. Old temple of Naradamuni swamy got modernised in the year 2004-2005 and brand new chariot(ಹೊಸತೇರು) built in the year 2017.

Another attraction near chigateri is wind mill fans along Jajikal hills which contributes some electric power to state.
