Carlos Bustos

Carlos Julio Bustos (born April 16, 1966) is a retired Argentine footballer and current head coach of Peruvian Primera División club Melgar.

As a footballer he played as a central defender having more activity in his native country, playing for important team such as Talleres, Deportivo Español, san Lorenzo, River Plate, Argetinos Juniors, Independiente and Huracán. Abroad he played for Pachuca,Morelia in two moments, team in which he retired.

As a head coach he had his first experiences in Argentina, precisely in Talleres, team in which he began his career in football soccer. His career was developed mainly in México, where he has coached Neza, Morelia, Guadalajara, Dorados de Sinaloa, Atlético San Luis and Cafetaleros de Tapachula; and in Perú, where he coached for two years the Universidad San Martín and now he is the coach of FBC Melgar.

Career

Playing career

Carlos Bustos began his career as a soccer player at 11 years old in Club Atlético Talleres, team where he debuted in the first division.

He was awarded in 1987 with the Córdoba Cuna de Campeones as the best footballer of the Province of Cordoba.

In 1990, he was transferred to Deportivo Español, being present in one of the most important periods of the history of the institution, participating in the CONMEBOL cup and Liguilla Pre Libertadores. For 1991 was loaned to Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, to participate in the Liguilla Pre Libertadores, being champions.

In January 1993, he is the new player of Club Atlético River Plate, team with which disputed several international competitions, among them the Copa Libertadores.

At the end of 1993, Asociación Atlética Argentinos Juniors incorporated him with an others international players, making a great team who played the national tournaments and the Supercopa.

From 94 to 96 he defended the colors of Club Atlético Independiente, having an outstanding participation and being champion of the Supercopa and Recopa Sudamericana.

On December 96 he was hired by Monarcas Morelia of Mexico, a team that was in problems of descent. For this season, the team not only managed to save itself from the descent, it also came to the semi-final of the tournament.

At the beginning of 1998 he arrives at Club de Fútbol Pachuca to dispute the tournament of First A, obtaining the promotion to the first division.

In June of the same year, returns to Argentina to wear the jersey of Club Atlético Huracán, having a brief stay in the club.

Again he is requested by Tomas Boy and Monarcas Morelia to play the closing tournament in 1999. As a result of repeated knee injuries, this was his last tournament as a professional player.

As a sporting director

He was the sports director of Club Atlético Universitario (Córdoba) in 2001, team that was playing in the Argentinos B tournament; And of Club Atlético Belgrano from 2002 to 2005 disputing the tournaments of the Nacional B.

Coaching career

After his career as a player, in 2000 Bustos began his career as Coach in his native country in the youth league of Talleres de Córdoba, being champion in both tournaments with the 6th category of the Asociación Cordobesa de Fútbol.

For 2005, he was named head coach of his first professional team, being this Sportivo Belgrano de San Francisco, Argentina, with which he disputed the tournament Federal B.

In 2007, he arrived to Atlas de Guadalajara of the Mexican soccer, for be assistant coach of Tomás Boy.

After this season, he returned to Argentina again to the Club Atlético Talleres, where he was coach of the 4th category of A.F.A., eventually being the interim head coach of the first team. Subsequently, in restructuring the club he remained as assistant coach of the first division in the processes of Humberto Grondona and Juan Amador Sánchez.

In 2009 he is again requested by Tomás Boy to form his coaching staff, this time in Monarcas Morelia, team in which they were until the end of the tournament closure 2012, qualifying 5 playoffs, being sub-champions of the LIGA MX in 2011 and being champions of the SuperLiga Norteamericana 2010.

For the opening of 2012 he gets his first opportunity at the head of a coaching staff in Mexico's professional soccer, coaching Neza FC in the ASCENSO MX, qualifying to the playoffs and the semifinal of the COPA MX.

For the 7th game of closing tournament in 2013, he was requested by Monarcas Morelia to be the head coach after Ruben Omar Romano was fired. In this season, he had an unbeaten streak from his first game to the first game in playoffs, finished in 4th general place. In the next season, he qualified again the team to the playoffs, being the 6th general place. For this same tournament, on November 5 was champion of the Copa México Apertura 2013, disputing this title with the Atlas of Guadalajara, giving Monarcas Morelia his first title of COPA MX and his second official title in the Mexican soccer.

For the opening tournament 2014 arrived to Club Deportivo Guadalajara, one of the most important teams and with more history of Mexican soccer, achieving to reach the quarterfinals of the COPA MX.

Later, for the closing of 2015, Dorados de Sinaloa is made of his services to lead the team in the ASCENSO MX, tournament in which he obtains the title of Champion against Atlético San Luis playing as a visitor. With this title Dorados de Sinaloa is able to dispute the final against the Champion of the opening 2014 in search of the ascent. On May 23, Bustos and Dorados de Sinaloa defeated Necaxa, playing as a visitor, achieving the promotion and returning the team to the first division of Mexican soccer after a nine-year absence.

In the closing 2016 is hired by Atletico San Luis from ASCENSO MX league, achieving with this team reach the semifinals of COPA MX.

At opening 2016 he was at charge of Cafetaleros de Tapachula, team also from the ASCENSO MX league.

From 2017, he advises and trains the institution San Francisco United F.C. of that city in California, United States.

From January 2018 to December 2019, he coached the squad of Club Deportivo Universidad de San Martin de Porres, team of the Liga 1. This project was characterized by the participation almost entirely of young players, where Bustos debuted more than 18 in those two years.

On Monday, December 2, 2019 he is announced as the new Coach of the Arequipa´s team FBC Melgar.
