C. J. Williams (judge)

Charles Joseph Williams (born 1963) is a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. He was formerly a United States Magistrate Judge of the same court.

Biography

Williams earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa and his Juris Doctor, with high distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law. He earned a Master of Laws degree focusing on criminal law from the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law. Upon graduation from law school he served as a law clerk to Judge Donald Eugene O'Brien of the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa.[1]

He spent three years as a trial attorney in the United States Department of Justice Criminal Division, being detailed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and then was in private practice in Kansas City, Missouri for five years. From 1997 to 2016, Williams served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa.[1]

Williams served as a United States Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa from 2016 to 2018.

District court service

On February 12, 2018, President Trump announced his intent to nominate Williams to an undetermined seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. On February 15, 2018, his nomination was sent to the Senate. President Trump nominated Williams to the seat vacated by Judge Linda R. Reade, who assumed senior status on October 1, 2017.[2] On March 21, 2018, a hearing on his nomination was held before the Senate Judiciary Committee.[3] On April 19, 2018, his nomination was reported out of committee by a 19–2 vote.[4] On September 6, 2018, his nomination was confirmed by a 79–12 vote.[5] He received his judicial commission on September 10, 2018.
