Brent Urban

Brent Urban (born May 5, 1991) is a Canadian professional American football defensive end for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia. Urban is the 26th Canadian to ever be drafted to the NFL.[1][2]

High school career

Urban attended Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, where he was a two-time Toronto Star All-Star selection for the football team. He had 16 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and eight pass break-ups as a junior.

He was considered a two-star recruit by Rivals.com.[3]

College career

Urban attended the University of Virginia from 2009 to 2013. In 2009, he redshirted as a true freshman. In 2010, he appeared in three games but did not record any statistics. In 2011, he appeared in all 13 games, recording 15 tackles, including 2.5 for loss. In 2012, he started all 12 games for the Cavaliers, totalling 20 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and recovered a fumble returning it 16 yards for a touchdown against Virginia Tech. In 2013, he started eight games before missing the last four due to injury. He recorded 40 tackles, including 11.5 for loss, one sack, and led the nation's defensive linemen with nine passes broken up despite missing four games.

Professional career

Hamilton Tiger Cats

Urban was selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the second round, 15th overall, of the 2013 CFL Draft.[4] The club would hold his rights if/when he decides to play in the Canadian Football League.

Baltimore Ravens

Urban was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round (134th overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.[5] He sustained a torn ACL in training camp, where coach John Harbaugh announced that he would miss the season.[6] He was placed on injured reserve on August 25, 2014.[7]

On August 8, 2015, Urban tore his biceps muscle in training camp and was placed on injured reserve with the designation to return.[8] He returned to practice on November 9 and was officially added to the active roster on November 25, 2015.[9] In his first NFL game in Week 12 against the Cleveland Browns, Urban blocked a potential game-winning field goal as time expired, while teammate Will Hill recovered it and returned it for the game-winning touchdown.[10]

In 2016, Urban played in all 16 games, recording 10 tackles and two passes defended.

In Week 3 of the 2017 season, Urban suffered a Lisfranc foot injury which required surgery.[11] He was placed on injured reserve on September 27, 2017.[12]

On March 6, 2018, Urban signed a one-year contract extension with the Ravens for $2.35 million.[13] He started all 16 games in 2018, recording 27 combined tackles, 0.5 sacks, and two passes defensed.

Tennessee Titans

On April 26, 2019, Urban signed with the Tennessee Titans.[14] He was released on October 19, 2019.[15]

Chicago Bears

On October 21, 2019, two days after being released by the Titans, Urban signed with the Chicago Bears.[16]

Urban re-signed with the Bears on March 26, 2020.[17]
