Plot

Bharat Ram, a brilliant and curious student, graduates with his 5th degree from Oxford. After celebrating, his uncle tells him that his father Raghava Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (pre-division), passed away from a stroke. Bharat flies home and reminisces.

As a child, Bharat spent most of his time with his mother and best friend Subash next door as his father was busy setting up a political party with his best friend Varadarajulu, the party president. After breaking a small promise, his mother scolds him and tells him about the importance of commitments. She dies in her sleep afterwards, impacting Bharat immensely. Raghava Rao then takes care of him at home, but Varadarajulu tells him that he must prepare for the upcoming elections and suggests he remarry to give Bharat a new mother. He agrees, having another child, Siddharth, with his new wife. Bharat's attempts to bond with his stepmother fail, so he spends more time at Subash's house. Soon, Subash's parents get job offers in London, and Bharat wants to go with them. Raghava Rao initially disagrees, but quickly relents.

After the flashback, Bharat arrives in India and attends his father's funeral amid heavy publicity. Varadarajulu tells Bharat that his father, an asthmatic, had to be hospitalized due to the cold and that the final rites were completed by Siddharth because Raghava Rao's death caused public disarray and they couldn't wait. Speculation abounds over who the next CM will be; meanwhile, Bharat talks to Siddharth, learning that he has become mute. Bharat then drives around the city and gets frustrated by the chaotic atmosphere. Varadarajulu introduces him to many politicians, including opposition party leader Sripathi Rao and his son Manohar. As Bharat prepares to return to London, Varadarajulu cancels his ticket, explaining that he should be the next CM. Bharat objects and asks Varadarajulu to accede instead, but he opposes based on his position and intra-party conflict.

Bharat reluctantly agrees and becomes CM despite his inexperience. However, his strict policies restore law and order, earning him the opposition's ire. On his first day, Bharat surprises the whole state by increasing the traffic fines, in order to make the society to follow the traffic instructions and also to make the society responsible. In Assembly, he gives a speech about what happens if we don't follow the traffic rules and mesmerized the assembly members including his opposition party members.

Meanwhile, Bharat sees a girl named Vasumathi and instantly falls in love with her. Bharat surprises Vasumathi by calling her and asks her out, kindling romance. Later Vasumathi also falls for him madly. And Bharat helps Siddarth for which Siddarth comes out from his mute.

Again Bharat surprises his party members by establishing free English Medium government schools and banned private schools that were gaining more income through education. The people start to like him.

Later Bharat also tries to expose the Manohar's scam, which involves his party members, with the help of CBCID Aravind Krishna. But Varadarajulu slaps Aravind and threatens him indirectly that he would kidnap his family if he won't stop. Aravind frightened and stops the case. Later Varadarajulu invites Bharat to the party, where he realizes that not only opposition party members but also his own party members including Varadarajulu were involved in Manohar's scam. There he promises that the politicians, who were involved in Manohar's scam, to turn them as responsible politicians.

Ramana and other villagers come to Bharat in tears, explaining how their MLA, fellow party member Damu, is unhelpful and corrupt. Now, his son, Jagadish is replacing him, and they seek guidance. Bharat tells Ramana to run against him. Varadarajulu warns Jagadish to threatens the village for not to support Ramana. Damu's henchmen kill many villagers in return, so Bharat sends undercover police officers to protect Ramana. Damu's police officers attempt to murder Ramana at his cinema hall, but Bharat arrives in time. Damu proclaims that Bharat is only powerful due to his bodyguards. Bharat defeats his henchmen. While Jagadish runs to beat him, Damu slaps Jagadish and he promises to Bharat that he will fight the elections well without making any nonsense. Later Ramana wins the elections with the highest majority and becomes a MLA.

Bharat soon decides local governance must be instated, which succeeds despite the assembly's disapproval. To stop the local governance, Varadarajulu with the help of Bharat's C.S Srivatsav, exposes Bharat's relationship with Vasumathi, causing a scandal and accusations of nepotism since she now works with him. It goes to be viral. Bharat gets frustrated for spoiling the Vasumathi's image. Later Bharat resigns, Varadarajulu becomes Chief Minister. Vasumathi and her constable father Ramachandra move to their native village by saying no to Bharat.

A furious and heartbroken Bharat arranges a press meet, where he attacks the media's sensationalism. There he explains how he and Vasumathi madly love each other but they stating it was an illegal relationship and he explains that if media can put their concentration in people's problems instead of celebrities' personals, then they can succeed. By watching this Vasumathi with tears in tv and Ramachandra feels very guilty.

Afterwards, Aravind explains to Bharat, the reason behind to stop the investigation of Manohar's scam, but later tells that Aravind and his team investigate this case personally and found out through reporter Mithra, who was hiding in Berhampur village, that the Manohar's scam was linked up with Raghava Rao's death. Bharat sees the call records of Raghava Rao and notices that Raghava Rao talking last time only with Mithra on the phone. Bharat, along with Bhaskar and Security Officer Mukthar, go there and learn that he met with Raghava Rao before his death and there he reveals that Varadarajulu's original name was Nanaji and proved Nanaji's corruption to him. As they leave, Mukthar gets shot in an ambush. Bharat takes him to a hospital and spots Varadarajulu's/Nanaji henchmen, so they can escape again. Bharat eventually fights them in an abandoned area. As an army of goons show up, a huge number of villagers arrive and fight with goons and protect him. There he feels happy seeing the affection of people towards him. They follow Bharat to Varadarajulu's/Nanaji's office, where they face each other. Varadarajulu reveals that he tampered Raghava Rao's medicines to slowly paralyze and kill him. Bharat swears that he will not not spare him and suggests he commit suicide before he reveals all evidence to the police. Finally, all the corrupt politicians are imprisoned, and Varadarajulu commits suicide. Bharat once again takes oath as a C.M.

The film ends with Bharat marrying Vasumathi with Ramachandra's approval and his stepmother accepts him as her son.

Release and reception

The film was released on 20 April 2018 to positive reviews.[9][10][11][12] Hemanth Kumar of Firstpost wrote "Mahesh Babu, Koratala Siva deliver an intense political drama". Kumar also said, "He (Siva) has shown yet again that there’s plenty of drama when a normal guy takes an uncommon path. Bharat might have become the messiah of the state in the story, but it’s Mahesh Babu who leaves a long lasting impression in the end. Two big thumbs up for the film. It delivers more than what it promises" giving 4 stars out of 5.[13]

Priyanka Sundar of Hindustan Times gave the film 3 stars out of 5, saying "Mahesh Babu as CM ushers in a new era. Mahesh Babu has the best of what commercial cinema has to offer – a strong subject, a tight film and a role he can chew on."[14]

Suhas Yellapantula of The Times of India rated the 3.5 stars out of 5, mentioning "Bharat Ane Nenu gives you a lot to root for and provides a bang for your buck but lacks the finesse that makes for a good political thriller.".[15]

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu wrote, "This promise ticks the right boxes.Bharat Ane Nenu deserves a thumbs up for its well thought out plot and nuanced characters. Keeping us hooked to the narrative are Mahesh Babu, accompanied by Prakash Raj in another winsome and complex role, Rahul Ramakrishna, Rao Ramesh, Brahmaji and Kiara Advani among others. Kiara is impressive.".[16]

Box office
