Bernardo Tengarrinha

Bernardo David Mendes Salgueiro Campos Tengarrinha (born 17 February 1989) is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder or a centre back.

Club career

Tengarrinha was born in Sátão, Viseu District. After seven years with S.L. Benfica he finished his youth career at FC Porto, being promoted to the first team in 2008 but having to wait several months to make his Primeira Liga debuts, as he was loaned in January 2009 to C.F. Estrela da Amadora; on 7 February he played his first game, a 0–0 home draw against Vitória de Setúbal, but the club would eventually be relegated due to financial irregularities.

Tengarrinha was loaned again for the 2009–10 season, now to newly promoted to the top level S.C. Olhanense.[1] He scored his first goal as a professional on 6 December 2009, but the Algarve side lost 2–5 at C.S. Marítimo.[2]

Tengarrinha spent the first part of the 2010–11 campaign with C.D. Santa Clara in the Segunda Liga, where he featured rarely.[3] In January 2011, still owned by Porto, he joined top flight club Vitória Setubal;[4] in the ensuing off-season, he signed a permanent contract at the latter.

On 15 July 2012, free agent Tengarrinha moved abroad for the first time and joined PFC CSKA Sofia from the First Professional Football League (Bulgaria).[5] On the very last day of the following transfer window, however, he returned to his country, signing a five-month deal at second tier's S.C. Freamunde.[6]

On 17 June 2014, after one season in division two with G.D. Chaves,[7] Tengarrinha returned to the Portuguese top level after penning a three-year contract with Boavista FC.[8] He contributed with one goal[9] in 27 matches in his first year, helping to a final 13th position.

On 8 June 2017, Tengarrrinha was due to sign with Romanian Liga I side CSM Politehnica Iași.[10] Shortly after, however, he put his career on hold after it was announced he was suffering from leukemia.[11]

International career

Tengarrinha won 21 caps for Portugal at youth level. His debut with the under-21s came on 4 June 2009, as he started in the 0–1 group stage home loss against Chile for that year's Toulon Tournament.[12]
