Belarusian Social Democratic Assembly
Belarusian Social Democratic Assembly (Belarusian: Беларуская сацыял-дэмакратычная Грамада, romanized: Bielaruskaja sacyjal-demakratyčnaja Hramada) known simply as "Hramada" or "The Assembly" is a social-democratic Belarusian opposition political party. The leader of the party since October 2018 is businessman Siarhei Charachen.[1]

Leadership
The previous head of the party from 1998 to 2018 was Stanislav Shushkevich who has the distinction of having been the first head of state of an independent Republic of Belarus between 1991 and 1994. After losing the election for president in 1994, he did not participate in politics again until helping to form the party in 1998. In 2004 he was not allowed to register as a candidate and so in the 2010 presidential election he was a supporter of candidate Andrei Sannikov.
History
- 1991 - Creation of the Belarusian Social Democratic Assembly, with Mikhail Tkachow be:Міхаіл Аляксандравіч Ткачоў as a chairman.
- 1992 - Aleh Trusaube:Алег Анатолевіч Трусаў becomes party chairman.
- 1996 - Association with Social Democratic Party of Popular Accord, formation of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (People's Assembly).
- 1998 - Reconstruction of the Belarusian Social Democratic Assembly, Stanislav Shushkevich becomes chairman.
- 2016 - The party boycotts the 2016 Belarusian parliamentary elections.
- 2018 - Siarhei Charachen becomes party chairman.
Policies
- The party supports fairness and equality and that everyone has the right to a decent standard of living and greater economic opportunities.
- The party takes a stand against corruption among government officials and supporters who became rich and put their own interests ahead of principles of justice, equality and solidarity.
- The party also campaigns for human dignity, a high standard of living, health and education.
- The party was in favor of reducing the Russian language to the status of second state-language in Belarus. However, the status of the Russian language was settled in a national referendum in 1995, when 83.3% of the population who took part in the referendum supported Russian being kept as the official (first) state language.
