The construction of this plant began in 1962 and on March 14, 1965 the first batch of fertilizers was produced. The plant's name, Azot, means nitrogen.

In September 1962, the first stone was laid in the foundation of the future plant, and in the same year a large-scale construction of ammonia production with a capacity of 108 thousand tons per year began.

In May 1963, the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR № 559 "On merging the nitrogen fertilizer plant with the ion exchange resin plant under construction" was adopted resulting in the new final name of the enterprise — Cherkasy Chemical Plant.

In December 1964, the ammonia water production department with a capacity of 432,000 tons per year was put into operation.

In 1967, a research and industrial plant for the production of ion-exchange resin was put into operation.

In May 1970, the second stage of ammonia production with a capacity of 400,000 tons of ammonia per year was put into operation, followed by a plant of nitric acid production with a capacity of 360,000 tons per year.

In 1979, an ammonia production plant with a capacity of 450,000 tons per year was put into operation, and the following year, a urea production plant with a capacity of 330,000 tons per year was launched.

In 1984-85, the production of caprolactam with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year was launched.

In 1987-88, a urea production plant with a capacity of 330,000 tons per year was launched.

In 1988, a household chemicals plant was put into operation.

Nowadays "Azot" has 43 subdivisions which are located on 500 hectares (1,200 acres) at the southern outskirts of Cherkasy city. "Azot" employs more than 6000 people.[2]

Fully loaded, the facilities allow to produce up to 3 million tonnes of fertilizers per year. The plant produces quality production which allows them to export it to Asia, Europe and America.
