Controversies and violations

In June 2019, a lawsuit was filed by the parents of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly bitten by a lemur.[4] The lawsuit detailed the aquarium falsely reported the lemur to be vaccinated, causing thousands of dollars in medical expenses for the child.[5]

In May 2019, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) cited the aquarium for failing to consult an attending veterinarian to determine the cause of ear problems found in kangaroos prior to treating them.[2]

In September 2018, the USDA cited the facility for failing to have a barrier around the enclosures for the coatimundi and red ruffed lemurs. The agency also found that the aquarium failed to upkeep the room designated as the kinkajou enclosure.

In July 2013, Austin Code Compliance issued two notices of violation for keeping animals and water tanks on the site without proper documentation.[6]
