Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013

Armenia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden. The Armenian entry was selected through a combination of an internal selection to select the artist and a national final to select the song, organised by the Armenian broadcaster Public Television of Armenia (ARMTV). Dorians represented Armenia with the song "Lonely Planet", which qualified from the second semi-final of the competition and placed 18th in the final, scoring 41 points.[1][2]

Before Eurovision

Artist selection

On 22 December 2013, ARMTV announced Gor Sujyan as the Armenian entrant at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013.[3] It was later announced that Gor Sujyan would perform at Eurovision with his band Dorians.

National final

The song that Dorians would perform at the 2013 contest was selected through a national final. ARMTV opened the song submission period for composers to send their entries from 22 January 2013 until 20 February 2013. From more than 70 songs submitted by composers from Spain, Belgium, Sweden, France and Armenia, a jury selected four songs for the competition.[4][5] The names of their composers were revealed after the national final.[6]

The final took place on 2 March 2013 at the ARMTV Studios in Yerevan, hosted by Gohar Gasparyan and Avet Barseghyan.[4][6] All four competing songs were performed by Gor Sujyan ( supported on stage by his band Dorians) with the winning song, "Lonely Planet", being decided upon by a 50/50 combination of the votes from a jury panel and a public SMS vote.[2][4] The jury panel consisted of Sergey Smbatyan (Conductor and Art director of State Youth Orchestra of Armenia), Sona (singer), Erik Antaranyan (Television host), Gevorg Hakobyan (opera singer) and Karen Kazaryan (Producer).[7]

The interval acts during the event were Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012 Armenian representatives Compass Band performing their entry "Sweetie Baby", 2013 Georgian representatives Nodi Tatishvili and Sophie Gelovani performing their entry "Waterfall" and 2013 Maltese representative Gianluca Bezzina performing his entry "Tomorrow".

Armenia was allocated to compete in the second semi-final on 16 May for a place in the final on 18 May.[9] In the second semifinal, the producers of the show decided that Armenia would perform 11th, following Israel and preceding Hungary.[10]

Armenia qualified from the second semi-final, placing 7th and scoring 69 points.[11][12] At the second semi-final winners' press conference, Armenia was allocated to perform in the first half of the final.[13] In the final, the producers of the show decided that Armenia would perform 12th, following Germany and preceding the Netherlands.[14] Armenia placed 18th in the final, scoring 41 points.[1]
