Area code 914

Area code 914 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for Westchester County, New York.

The blue region is New York state; the red region is area code 914.

914 was among the first area codes announced in October 1947.[1] It was assigned to most of the New York state portion of the New York metropolitan area, excluding New York City, which was assigned area code 212. Numbering plan area (NPA) 914 included Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware counties. In 1951, Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk) split off as area code 516,[1][2] and 914 was reduced to serve the lower Hudson Valley.

This configuration remained in place for 49 years. However, by the turn of the millennium, 914 was on the brink of exhaustion due to the growing demand for cell phones and Internet dial-up connections. The supply of numbers was further limited because the entire New York state portion of the New York metropolitan area (the Five Boroughs, the lower Hudson and Long Island) is a single LATA.[3]

As a result, 914 was split on June 5, 2000, reducing its numbering plan area to Westchester County. The rest of the lower Hudson Valley received area code 845. Area code 914 was grandfathered for all cell phones in use before the split.[2]
