Archie Harris (athlete)

Archie Harris (July 03, 1918 - 1965) was an American discus thrower.

As Indiana University student he won the 1940 NCAA Track and Field Championships,[1] defending his title 1941 with the world record of 53.26 m. In 1941 he also became US champion.

In World War II he was a bomber pilot, but as an African American he couldn't get a job as a commercial pilot after the war. Finally he became physical education teacher at the Harlem, New York YMCA.[2]

In 2001 he was introduced into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame.[3]
