Anyako

Anyako is a town in the Volta Region of Ghana.[1][2] It is bordered at the south by the Keta lagoon. The inhabitants of the town mainly belong to the Ewe tribe.[3] Tracing its establishment to a settlement founded by the Anlos during the migration from Notsie in present-day Togo. Historically the town is the birthplace of The great Ewe poet Hesinor Vinorko Akpalu Akpa. (Torgbui Akpalu), the renown traditional music composer, who was well-known all over the land for his rich repertoire and gift in traditional composition. Charles Kobla Nutornutsi Wovenu, The founder, Apostles’ Revelation Society (ARS) also hailed from Anyako. Kobla Ladzekpo, the founder and director of Zadonu African Music and Dance Company in U.S.A. and Artist El Anatsui. The town has experienced little to no growth over the past thirty years due to sea erosion which affected commercial activities.[4]

Contribution to Ghanaian politics

Anyako produced lots of political figures in Ghana's history. The 1st Inspector General of Police of Ghana John Willie Kofi Harlley who was also a former foreign minister of Ghana; and a member of the Presidential Commission that ruled Ghana during the military era of the National Liberation Council came from Anyako.

Culture

Some popular foods eaten by the locals include Akple or Banku, Yakayake, Abolo and Gbɔvilolo kalami.

Education

Anyako is blessed with a senior school and three basic and Junior Schools.The second cycle institutions is known as Anyako Secondary School which is a (Formerly known as Anlo Awoamefia school). The Basic and Junior Schools are E.P. Basic School, A.A. Fia/L.A. Basic and Junior Schools, and R.C. Basic and Junior Schools.

Notable sons

  • Komla Agbeli Gbedemah - In terms of nationalism, Anyako has an enviable reputation; as their unforgettable son, Agbeli Komla Gbedemah, played a major part in a struggle for Ghana's independence and had contributed in no small measure to national development.[5]

Gbedemah was a revolutionary youth activist and an iconic statesman who, as a senior architect of both the modern Ghanaian state and Republic, played a critical role in shaping the political landscape of our nation for decades. He was one of the ten political figures whose life and work spanned the country’s political history up to date. He was instrumental in the formation of the CYO, the Youth wing of the UGCC and later became one of the pioneering figures in the Convention People’s Party (CPP). As one of the most erudite and gifted organizers, his organizational skills made it possible for the CPP to win the 1951 elections. He is widely recognised as the mastermind who propelled the image of Kwame Nkrumah, the father of Pan-Africanism - to national attention. He’s also credited for entire campaign, the election, the presidency and the Akosombo Dam. Gbedemah won the Keta constituency seat. Became the first Finance Minister of Ghana. So when it comes to Ghana's Founding Fathers, Gbedemah can never be left out.

Other national figures include *Corporal Patrick Gagbanlè Attipoe ["MARTYR of X'borg Crossroads]- WWII veteran and one of three ex-servicemen of Gold Coast Regiment Who died unjustifiably during Christiansborg shooting while on their way to present a petition to Sir Gerald Creasy who was Governor of Gold Coast at the time. The event which sparked the fight for Ghana's Independence that we enjoy today.

  • Col. B. K. Ahlijah - The former Commissioner for Local Government and later Industries in the Acheampong regime.
  • Alex Segbefia - Deputy Chief of Staff and Minister of Health during Atta Mills and John Mahama's government respectively.
  • Isaac Dogboe - Former World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion.[6]
  • Chris A Ackummey- Former Acting Managing Director Ghana Oil Company Limited.[7]
  • Corporal Patrick Gagbale Attipoe- He was a Ghanaian ex-serviceman and veteran of World War II. He was one of the three veterans shot dead by Major Imray. while on their way to present a petition to Sir Gerald Creasy who was Governor of Gold Coast at the time. The death of these three ex-servicemen led to the 1948 Accra Riots.[8] In his loving memory, his statue has been unveiled at Kpota[9][10]
