Until 1869 student at the École Royale Militaire. Until 1914 Commander in Chief of the Rijkswacht. Chief Commander of the Belgian army since 25 May until 6 September 1914. During his office the Kingdom was invaded by the German troops and the Belgian mobilization started.[1] On 6 September of the same year he was dismissed by the King, after advice of Lieutenant General Baron Louis de Ryckel.[2][3] The same Decree abolished the function of Chief of Staff of the army.
